Church of San Gil y Santa Ana
This is the parish church of San Gil and Santa Ana, on the left bank of the Darro, next to Plaza Nueva and at the foot of the Alhambra. Work began in 1537 to a design by Diego de Siloé, on the site of the Almanzora mosque. It is a single-nave church with side chapels, built of brick, in the Mudéjar style with Renaissance elements. The doorway, designed by Sebastián de Alcántara in 1542 and finished by Juan de Alcántara in 1547, is Renaissance, with Corinthian columns and sculptures by Diego de Aranda. The slender tower was built between 1561 and 1563 under Juan Castellar. Inside there are wooden Mudéjar ceilings, paintings from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, an Our Lady of Sorrows by José de Mora from 1671 and a Calvary by Diego de Aranda. The parish received its present name in 1948, after the demolition of the church of San Gil in 1869, and has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1931.
