Church of St Michael (Murcia)
The Church of St Michael is one of the traditional parish churches of Murcia's historic centre, with medieval origins documented from 1272. The present building, built between 1691 and 1712, is one of the finest examples of Murcian Baroque, especially for its interior, which holds a rich collection of altarpieces and sculptures. The most representative feature is the main altarpiece, commissioned in 1731 from Jacinto Perales and Francisco Salzillo, with images of archangels, virtues and supporting angels carved by Salzillo; it is considered one of the finest examples of Baroque altarpiece not only in the city but in the whole Region of Murcia. Notable sculptural works include the image of the titular St Michael, by Nicolás Salzillo (1708), the St Jude Thaddeus (before 1718) and the St Joseph and Child by the same author; the Holy Family, one of Francisco Salzillo's most important early works; the Immaculate Conception and the former Sorrowful Virgin of the Holy Steps, also by Salzillo; the Nazarene of the Bailío (1797) by Roque López, a disciple of Salzillo; and the titular crucified Christ of the Brotherhood of Mercy, a 16th-century Renaissance work by Domingo Beltrán. The church has been the seat of the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Mercy since 1949, which processes on Good Friday evening. The present tower dates from 1879, after the previous one collapsed in 1864.
