St. Stephen's Cathedral stands on Stephansplatz in the centre of Vienna and is notable for its multicoloured tiled roof and its two bell towers, the South Tower and the North Tower, visible from various points across the city. Inside, visitors walk through three naves lined with numerous altars holding artworks and objects donated over the centuries, and can also see the tombs of nobles beneath the cathedral floor. The building combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements, the result of extensions and renovations since its origins in the 12th century, and retains details such as gargoyles on the exterior and the Pummerin bell, rebuilt after a fire.
