Fluntern Cemetery
Fluntern Cemetery is on the slope of the Zürichberg, beside the zoo and its tram stop. It was opened in 1887 by the municipality of Fluntern with a strictly axial layout inspired by the Baroque; when Fluntern was incorporated into Zurich in 1893, the plan to close it was dropped because of opposition from local residents, and it was extended several times. It covers about 33,000 square metres. It is known for the graves of illustrious people: the writer James Joyce, who died in 1941 and in 1966 was moved to an honorary city grave, next to his wife Nora Barnacle, with a sculpture by the American Milton Hebald. Also buried here are the Nobel Prize in Literature winner Elias Canetti, the Nobel chemistry laureates Paul Karrer and Leopold Ružička, the actress Therese Giehse and the publisher Daniel Keel, founder of Diogenes.
