Polybahn
The Polybahn is a funicular linking Central, next to the main station, with the Polyterrasse, the terrace in front of the ETH main building. It opened in 1889 as the Zürichbergbahn and at first ran on water ballast in a tank under the car; it was electrified in 1897. In 1976 a Swiss bank saved it from closure, and in 1996 it was almost completely rebuilt and automated. It is 176 metres long, climbs 41 metres, with an average gradient of 23%, and takes about 100 seconds. Two 50-seat cars pass each other at the passing loop, on a viaduct that crosses the Seilergraben street. At the top, the terrace opens up a view over the old town and Lake Zurich. Its name comes from the former Federal Polytechnic, now the ETH, and the university and the Natural History Museum are nearby.
