Karl-Marx-Allee
Karl-Marx-Allee is a boulevard almost two kilometres long and about 89 metres wide, flanked by monumental buildings of between seven and nine storeys. Its façades are decorated with mosaics and reliefs depicting scenes of socialist working life, incorporating motifs from Karl Friedrich Schinkel's traditional Berlin. Along its length stand the twin towers of the Frankfurter Tor, Strausberger Platz with its copper fountain designed by Fritz Kühn, and cultural buildings such as the Café Moskau, the Kino International and the Mokka-Milch-Eisbar. On 17 June 1953, the avenue was the focal point of a protest by construction workers against increased work quotas, which grew into an uprising that was crushed by Soviet forces.
