Papal basilica next to the Verano Cemetery, over the tomb of the martyr St Lawrence, beneath the high altar. The bombing of 1943 destroyed the façade mosaics, and it was rebuilt with original materials. It keeps 13th-century frescoes in the portico, a Cosmatesque floor, the triumphal arch mosaic and the tomb of Pius IX in the crypt.
