MOSE System
CultureVisit: ~60 minFree
The MOSE system protects Venice and its lagoon from the high tides known as acqua alta by means of mobile gates installed on the seabed. The barriers are placed at the Lido, Malamocco and Chioggia inlets, which connect the lagoon with the Adriatic Sea. When a high tide is forecast, air is pumped into the hollow gates so that they rise to about 45 degrees and block the entry of water from the Adriatic. When the tide event is over, the gates fill with water and sink back down until they rest in their housings on the seabed.
