Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo
Monastery founded in 1301 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, known as el Bueno, and his wife María Alonso Coronel, in Santiponce, next to the ruins of Italica. It first belonged to the Cistercian order and, from 1431, to the Hieronymites, who occupied it until the confiscations of the 19th century. The complex combines Gothic and Mudéjar architecture: two twin churches built by Guzmán el Bueno and his son Juan Alonso, two cloisters (the Cloister of the Dead and the Cloister of the Evangelists), a chapter house with 15th-century frescoes and a refectory with a mural of the Last Supper. In the upper church are the tombs of the founders, with recumbent sculptures attributed to Juan Martínez Montañés, who also made the high altarpiece, dedicated to Saint Jerome with reliefs of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Epiphany. Declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1872, the monastery is visited without a guide and in about 45 minutes, and is usually combined with the neighbouring visit to the Roman site of Italica.
