Nelson's Column
Nelson's Column presides over Trafalgar Square, in central London, in memory of Admiral Horatio Nelson and his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. It was built between 1840 and 1843 to a design by William Railton, and measures 51.59 metres from the base of the pedestal to the top of the figure's hat. The shaft is Dartmoor granite, of the Corinthian order, with a bronze capital cast from cannons from the wreck of HMS Royal George. At the top, the statue, more than five metres tall, is the work of Edward Hodges Baily, carved from Craigleith sandstone in three blocks. The pedestal carries four bronze reliefs, cast from captured French cannons: Cape St Vincent, the Nile, Copenhagen and the death of Nelson. In 1867 four bronze lions designed by Edwin Landseer were added.
