Farnese Palace
Palazzo Farnese, in Piazza Farnese, is an imposing 16th-century Renaissance building. Its brick façade with travertine details has 13 windows per floor with alternating pediments. Inside, the arcaded courtyard with ascending orders (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian) reflects Michelangelo's involvement. The Farnese Gallery, with frescoes by Annibale Carracci (1597-1608), shows 'The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne' on the vault and was key to the development of the Baroque. Other rooms preserve frescoes by Daniele da Volterra and Francesco Salviati. Although it is the seat of the French Embassy, you can admire its exterior architecture and, on occasion, enter some rooms on guided tours.
