Portugal Pavilion

The Portugal Pavilion is a historic building constructed for Seville's 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, located on Avenida de El Cid, on the corner with Avenida de Portugal. It is now the seat of the Portuguese consulate in Seville. The project, chosen by competition in 1928, was the work of architects Carlos and Guilherme Rebelo de Andrade, who were awarded 20,000 escudos, and was inspired by the domestic architecture of the reign of John V. Its 26-metre-high dome, orientalist in style and covered in glazed tile, stands out. Inside, the hall of honour retains allegorical paintings of Oceania, Asia, America and Africa, by Luiz Varela Aldemira and Martinho Gomes da Fonseca. The staircases are decorated with paintings by Benvido Ceia. The tiles of the main courtyard were made by João Alves de Sá, and Mario Reis created six decorative panels for the sales galleries; Leopoldo Battistini and Viriato da Silva, from the Constança factory, decorated other rooms. Statues of historic Portuguese figures such as João Gonçalves Zarco, Afonso de Albuquerque, Vasco da Gama, Henry the Navigator and Luís de Camões were placed in the gardens, although some are now kept in Lisbon. During the exposition the pavilion displayed works of goldsmithing, ceramics and painting, and it hosted the Portuguese Cultural Exhibition of the Age of Discoveries in 1929.
