Sentō Imperial Palace
Sentō Palace was completed in 1630 as a residence for the retired emperor Go-Mizunoo, together with Ōmiya Palace, intended for an empress dowager. It stands in the southeast corner of Kyoto Gyoen park. Several fires destroyed and rebuilt it, until that of 1854, after which it was not rebuilt. Only two teahouses remain standing, the Seika-tei, sober with a simple roof, and the Yūshin-tei, rustic with a thatched roof and a round window. The garden, attributed to Kobori Enshū, centres on a large pond with islands; the two ponds, north and south, were joined by a channel in 1747. The shore of the south pond is covered with rounded stones and there are six bridges, one with a wisteria pergola of 1895.
