Statue of Franz Kafka (Jaroslav Róna)
This monument to Franz Kafka is a bronze work by Jaroslav Róna, unveiled in 2003 after a competition to which, in 2000, eight sculptors were invited on the initiative of the Franz Kafka Society. It stands 375 centimetres tall and weighs about 800 kilos. It stands on the corner of Dušní and Vězeňská streets, in the Jewish Quarter of Josefov, between the Spanish Synagogue and the Church of the Holy Spirit. It shows Kafka on the shoulders of a huge, headless figure, which is just an empty suit. The scene comes from his story "Description of a Struggle", from 1912, in which a character jumps on the shoulders of his former dominant companion. Kafka points forward with one hand, as if showing the way. Not to be confused with David Černý's rotating head.
