It is Barcelona's great central square, of about five hectares, a hinge between the old town and the Eixample; La Rambla and the Passeig de Gràcia start from it. Its development was long: the 1889 competition was won by Pedro Falqués, works began in 1902 and King Alfonso XIII inaugurated it on 2 November 1927, after projects by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Francesc Nebot, and final execution by Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí, among others. There are fountains and sculptures by Josep Clarà (The Goddess), Frederic Marès (Barcelona) and Pablo Gargallo (The Shepherd), as well as the monument to Francesc Macià, by Josep Maria Subirachs, from 1991. It is also a major transport hub: metro lines L1 and L3, Rodalies trains and numerous bus lines stop here.
