State Russian Museum
The first state museum of Russian art, opened to the public in 1898 in the Mikhailovsky Palace, the work of Carlo Rossi on Arts Square. It brings together medieval icons and painting, sculpture and applied arts from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Highlights include Repin's "Barge Haulers on the Volga", Bryullov's "The Last Day of Pompeii" and Aivazovsky's "The Ninth Wave".
