Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood

CultureVisit: ~60 minFrom €7

Church built between 1883 and 1907 on the spot on the Griboyedov Canal where Tsar Alexander II was fatally wounded in 1881. Its style, with colourful onion domes, evokes 17th-century Russian architecture and recalls St Basil's in Moscow. The interior is covered almost entirely in mosaics, more than 7,000 square metres, making it one of the most extensive mosaic ensembles in Europe.
