Museum of modern and contemporary art opened in 1986, right beside the cathedral and the station. Its collection of American pop art is among the most important in Europe, and it also holds one of the largest Picasso collections outside Spain, Russian avant-garde and German Expressionism. It grew out of donations from the collector Peter Ludwig and his wife Irene.
