Great Synagogue of Florence (Tempio Maggiore) and Jewish Museum
The synagogue, at Via Luigi Carlo Farini 6, was designed from 1870 and inaugurated in 1882. It was designed by Marco Treves, Falcini and Micheli in an eclectic style inspired by Moorish architecture, with Venetian, Arab, Byzantine and Romanesque elements. Its façade alternates bands of travertine and pink stone, and it is crowned by a green copper dome that stands out on the city skyline. Inside, the prayer hall has arabesques with gold leaf and geometric designs; the Aron ha-Kodesh, which holds the Torah scrolls, has Venetian mosaics. The adjoining Jewish Museum displays ceremonial objects, textiles and documents of the Florentine Jewish community over several floors, and ends with a section dedicated to the memory of the Shoah.
