Florence National Archaeological Museum
The museum occupies the Palazzo della Crocetta, on Piazza Santissima Annunziata, a palace built in 1620 by Giulio Parigi for Princess Maria Maddalena de' Medici. It opened as a museum in 1870 in the presence of King Victor Emmanuel II and moved to this building a decade later. It brings together pieces from the Medici and Lorraine collections, with a first-rate Etruscan section. Here you will find the Chimera of Arezzo, discovered in 1553, the bronze Arringatore and the François Vase, an Attic black-figure krater from around 570 BC signed by the potter Ergotimos and the painter Kleitias. It also holds the Pesaro Idol and the Minerva of Arezzo, as well as the second Egyptian museum in Italy, formed from the Medici collections and Champollion's expedition of 1828-1829.
