Monastery founded in 1282 by Daniel of Moscow, regarded as the oldest in the city. Since 1983 it has been the residence of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and the administrative seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. Its bells, which came from Harvard University and returned in 2008, are among the best-known chimes in Russia.
