Fortified convent founded in 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili III to commemorate the conquest of Smolensk. Its red and white walls and its towers surround the Cathedral of the Smolensk Mother of God. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Next to it is the Novodevichy Cemetery, where Chekhov, Gogol, Khrushchev, Yeltsin and Shostakovich, among others, are buried.
