Green square in the centre of Reykjavik, with Parliament (Alþingi) on one side, a stone building from 1881, and the cathedral right next to it. In the middle stands the statue of Jón Sigurðsson, leader of the independence movement, put up in 1911. The square has been the scene of demonstrations and celebrations, and today it is a meeting place with cafés around it.
