Père Lachaise Cemetery
Père Lachaise Cemetery, located at 16 Rue du Repos in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, is the largest cemetery within the city and one of the most famous in the world. Opened in 1804 and designed by the neoclassical architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, it combines an English garden layout with funerary monuments of great artistic value. It holds more than a million burials, 70,000 graves and 5,300 trees, and is used by many Parisians as a park. Among its points of interest are the graves of illustrious figures such as Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Frédéric Chopin, Molière and La Fontaine, as well as the Communards' Wall, a memorial to the Paris Commune, and the Monument to the Dead by Albert Bartholomé. The grounds include a Byzantine-style columbarium and crematorium, a neoclassical chapel and old religious enclosures. It is also a haven for biodiversity, with foxes and 100 bird species. The cemetery offers six themed routes and an interactive map for locating graves. Admission is free.
