Place de la Bastille

The Place de la Bastille stands on the site of the former Bastille fortress, a symbol of the French Revolution after it was stormed on 14 July 1789. At the centre of the square rises the July Column, a 52-metre green bronze monument topped by a gilded statue of the Genius of Liberty, commemorating the Revolution of 1830, beneath which lie the remains of that uprising's revolutionaries. Visitors can see the outline of the former fortress marked on the pavement by a triple row of cobblestones and, near the opera house, remains of the prison's foundations at the Bastille metro station. The square regularly hosts fairs, concerts and markets, and every Sunday afternoon serves as the starting point for a rollerblading tour through the streets of Paris. The surrounding area is full of cafés, restaurants and nightclubs, making it a lively spot, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
