Ninna-ji
CultureVisit: ~75 min
Buddhist temple of the Shingon school founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, who retired here as a monk; for centuries its abbots were members of the imperial family. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It preserves a five-storey pagoda from 1644 and the Niō-mon gate. It is famous for the late-blooming Omuro cherry trees, which flower in mid-April, when those in the rest of Kyoto have already fallen.
