Río Real Watchtower
The Torre del Río Real is a watchtower in Marbella, next to the Mediterranean motorway, at the point where the Río Real reaches the coast. Built in 1575, it was part of the coastal watch system used by both Arabs and Christians and is a listed Site of Cultural Interest. The tower is 10.85 metres high and 22 metres in circumference, with a circular plan, a truncated conical profile and a square base. Its entrance sits about 6.5 metres above the ground and leads to an interior chamber accessed from the north side, with a small rectangular opening on the south side and an internal staircase leading to the roof terrace. It retains three of its original four symmetrical machicolations, notably the one above the entrance. It is built of cut and dressed stone blocks. The exterior can be viewed from the public space.
