Torre del Oro

The Torre del Oro is an Almohad watchtower built between 1220 and 1221, on the eastern bank of the Guadalquivir, in the Arenal district, next to the Maestranza bullring and facing the Triana neighbourhood. The first section is dodecagonal, 15.20 metres in diameter; the second section is Mudéjar in style, built during the reign of Pedro I, and the third, circular section was added in 1760 by the military engineer Sebastián Van der Borcht after the Lisbon earthquake. The whole structure reaches 36.75 metres in height. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931 and last restored in 2005. Since 1944 it has housed a Naval Museum run by the Navy, displaying old navigational instruments, models, historical documents, engravings and nautical charts that trace Seville's relationship with the Guadalquivir and the sea. The tower was one of two anchor points of a great chain that could block the river, used in the city's defence. On its west face, tiles remain that record the level reached by three 19th-century floods.
