The Natural History Museum in London, located in South Kensington, is one of the three great museums on Exhibition Road and a world-leading institution for the study of natural history. Its collection numbers more than 80 million specimens across five main areas: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. The main building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse in the Romanesque style and opened in 1881, is decorated with terracotta reliefs of flora and fauna, and its great central hall (Hintze Hall) houses the skeleton of a blue whale named 'Hope', suspended from the ceiling. Permanent highlights include the animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex model in the Dinosaurs Gallery, the giant sequoia on the second floor of Hintze Hall, the stegosaurus skeleton 'Sophie' in the Earth Hall, and the Diplodocus 'Fern' in the Evolution Garden. Admission is free, though some temporary exhibitions and experiences require a paid ticket. The museum also offers guided tours, such as the 'Museum Highlights Tour' and the 'Spirit Collection Tours', which allow visitors to see specimens not on public display, such as the giant squid 'Archie'. It also has a shop, cafés and a wildlife garden on its west lawn.
