Athena Promachos
On the Acropolis of Athens, between the Erechtheion and the Propylaea, there once stood a colossal bronze statue of Athena sculpted by Phidias. The statue showed the goddess in a fighting stance, with a crested helmet, a spear resting on her shoulder and a shield, and the tip of her spear and her plume were visible to sailors approaching from Cape Sounion. The pedestal on which it stood is still preserved on the Acropolis, and trophies from the Persian Wars were placed on it. The work was destroyed in 1203 during a riot in the Forum of Constantine, where it had been moved, and today it is known only from coins and Roman copies.
