Pantheon of the Braganzas
The Pantheon of the Braganzas is in the former refectory of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, in the Alfama district. Inside, visitors can walk through a solemn space where the marble tombs of the monarchs and princes of the House of Braganza are lined up, from John IV to Manuel II. Most of the tombs are simple marble boxes, with crowns engraved in gold for the kings and a crown over the whole. In the central aisle the tombs of Carlos I, Luís Filipe, Manuel II and Queen Amélie stand out, the first two assassinated in the regicide of 1908, beside a statue of a woman symbolising the homeland in tears. The visit is part of the monastery route and gives a close look at the history of the last Portuguese royal dynasty.
