Zagreb Mosque
The Islamic centre of the Croatian capital, completed in 1987 in the Gavellina area, next to the Folnegovićevo neighbourhood. It was designed by the Sarajevo architects Džemal Čelić and Mirza Gološ, and the complex covers about 10,000 square metres. Besides the prayer hall with its dome, it includes a minaret of about 51 metres, an Islamic secondary school (madrasa), a library, social spaces, an administrative building and housing. The calligraphic decoration of the complex is the work of Ešref Kovačević. Before this building, in 1944 the former Museum of Fine Arts designed by Ivan Meštrović had been converted into a mosque, with three minarets added, but the city ordered it to be vacated in 1948 and the minarets were demolished. The present mosque was built from 1981. It has the look of a modern complex with traditional motifs, visible from the street without needing to go in.
