National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC)
The MNAC occupies the Palau Nacional, an Italianate-style building from 1929 at the top of Montjuïc, above Plaça d'Espanya. It opened as a national museum on 16 December 2004, after a renovation begun in 1990 to a design by Gae Aulenti and Enric Steegmann. Its collection of Romanesque art is the most outstanding: it brings together mural paintings rescued in the early 20th century from churches in the Pyrenees, among them the apse of Sant Climent de Taüll, with the 12th-century Christ in Majesty. These are followed by Gothic art from the Crown of Aragon, the Renaissance and the Baroque, with works from the Cambó bequest (Titian, Rubens, Goya), and modern Catalan art, with the Modernisme of Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol. General admission includes the viewing terrace on the façade, with views over the city.
