L'Umbracle

NatureVisit: ~45 minFree

L'Umbracle is the landscaped promenade and viewpoint that serves as the entrance to the City of Arts and Sciences. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava; it covers a car park and measures about 320 metres long by 60 wide. Its structure is a succession of parabolic arches 18 metres high, 55 fixed and 54 floating, beneath which climbing plants such as honeysuckle and bougainvillea grow. The garden mixes Mediterranean vegetation of the Valencian Community, such as rockrose, mastic and rosemary, with palm trees and bitter orange trees, and it changes with the seasons. It is home to the Sculpture Walk, an open-air gallery with works by contemporary artists, and an Astronomy Garden. From the upper part you get a head-on view of the buildings of the complex. It is reached from the south-west side of the City of Arts and Sciences, in the old Turia riverbed.
