New Cathedral of Salamanca

CultureVisit: ~60 minFrom €6Opening hours: No especificado en las fuentes

The New Cathedral of Salamanca is a monumental church built between the 16th and 18th centuries, combining late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. Inside, with three naves and side niche chapels, the highlights are the highly complex star vaults, the Main Chapel with a crimson velvet canopy and an image of the Virgin of the Assumption, and the choir with two-tiered stalls. It houses two historic organs: the Epistle organ, a 16th-century Renaissance one, and the Gospel organ, a Baroque one from 1744. Among the side chapels, the Chapel of the Christ of the Battles stands out, with a 12th-century Romanesque image, as does the altar of the Christ of the Redeeming Agony, an anonymous 15th-century carving that is carried in procession during Holy Week. The 92-metre bell tower was left leaning and encased in stone after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, and its bell is rung in the "Mariquelo" tradition every 31 October. The building was declared a National Monument in 1887.
