Carris Museum
The Carris Museum, in the Alcântara neighbourhood, occupies the old Santo Amaro Depot and shows the history of Lisbon's public transport across three spaces. The first, devoted to history, covers in five rooms the founding of the company, horse-drawn traction, the funiculars and the Santa Justa lift, electrification, and the evolution of the company and of the metro, with documents, photographs and objects such as uniforms and work instruments; it also recreates an administrative office and a mid-20th-century medical post, and displays instruments of the Carris band. The second space, in workshop halls of about 2,000 m², brings together original vehicles from horse-drawn traction to buses of the second half of the 20th century, as well as a rebuilt electrical substation and a typography workshop. The third shows vehicles undergoing restoration. The journey between the rooms is made aboard a 1901 tram remodelled in the 1960s and decorated by Pedro Leitão. The museum also has a multimedia room with testimonies from former employees and a shop with publications and objects related to Carris.
