Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas Church

The church of Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas, at 252 Rue Saint-Jacques, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, is a religious building whose history goes back to the twelfth century, when Hospitaller monks from Altopascio (Tuscany) settled there to care for the poor, the sick and pilgrims on the Way of St James. The present church was completed in 1685, following a reconstruction led by architect Daniel Gittard. Its exterior is austere, influenced by Jansenism, with a classical façade and a Gothic tower. Inside, also sober, notable features include a collection of nineteenth-century paintings and stained glass, the Chapel of the Virgin (1687, designed by Libéral Bruant), and an organ whose wooden case dates in part from 1587, considered the oldest in Paris. The church holds the tombs of astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini and mathematician Philippe de La Hire, and a statue of St James the Greater as a pilgrim. It was listed as a historic monument in 1957 and remains an active parish.
