Church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir
A parish church in the historic centre, on Calle Caballeros, of Gothic origin from the 15th century: a single nave with six rib vaults and side chapels. Between 1690 and 1700 the interior was decorated with Baroque frescoes designed by Antonio Palomino and executed by Dionís Vidal, covering the vaults with scenes from the lives of Saint Nicholas and Saint Peter Martyr. After the 2014-2016 restoration, funded by the Hortensia Herrero Foundation with 4.7 million euros, it is known as the Valencian Sistine Chapel. The exterior was remodelled in Neo-Gothic style in 1861 by Timoteo Calvo. It holds works by Juan de Juanes, Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina and the sculptor Ignacio Vergara. The visit includes an audio guide and La Luz de San Nicolás, a video-mapping experience on the Baroque vault. It remains an active parish church, with a pilgrimage on Mondays.
