Church of San Giorgio in Velabro

CultureVisit: ~15 minFree

A church hidden away in the Velabro district, at the foot of the Palatine, in the area where tradition places the basket with Romulus and Remus. It probably dates back to the 6th century, in the time of Gregory the Great, and was dedicated to St George and St Sebastian. Its irregular plan suggests that it was built on top of an earlier Roman building. The Romanesque bell tower is from the 12th century, and the portico and rose window were renewed in the 13th. In 1993 a bombing destroyed the portico and the tympanum, but not the bell tower, and after restoration it reopened in 1996. The interior has three aisles separated by columns of marble and granite with Ionic and Corinthian capitals. Above the altar stands a 12th-century ciborium and in the apse there is a fresco attributed to Pietro Cavallini showing Christ and Saints George, Peter, Mary and Sebastian.
