Temple of Apollo Palatinus
CultureVisit: ~30 minFrom €18
On the slope of the Palatine facing the Circus Maximus survive the excavated remains of the temple that Augustus dedicated to Apollo. You can make out the large artificial terrace of the Area Apollinis, the temple podium built of tufa and travertine blocks and Carrara marble, and fragments of its decoration, such as polychrome terracotta plaques with mythological themes. Next to the temple there was a library and a portico, and the complex formed part of the Augustan monumental programme for the hill.
