Cathedral of the Saviour of Albarracín

CultureVisit: ~45 minFrom €4

The cathedral occupies the centre of Albarracín's historic quarter and is organised as a single Gothic nave with side chapels between buttresses. Inside, the main chapel houses a Renaissance altarpiece from 1566 with a central relief of the Transfiguration, while the chapel of the Virgen del Pilar surprises with its Baroque altarpiece, dome and stucco work. Other chapels preserve an unpainted wooden altarpiece attributed to Gabriel Yoly and 16th-century grisaille wall paintings. At the foot of the church, the choir has a rib vault, Renaissance stalls and a 16th-century screen. Outside, the four-tier Renaissance tower rises over the square, where reused Roman ashlar blocks can be seen. The main entrance is through the east end, via a Baroque doorway preceded by a flight of steps.
