Roman Bridge of Salamanca
The Roman bridge of Salamanca, also called the Puente Mayor del Tormes, crosses the River Tormes and is one of the city's most emblematic monuments. It consists of two clearly differentiated sections: the part closest to the urban centre, of Roman origin, preserves fourteen semicircular arches built with Los Santos granite; the opposite part, known as the new or Hispanic bridge, dates from the 12th-13th centuries and has eleven arches. The two are separated by a central turret. Along the bridge you can see the marks of the lifting tongs on the stones, the gargoyle-shaped drains and, at the entrance from the arrabal, two 17th-century commemorative pilasters with coats of arms and inscriptions. At the urban end is the stone verraco, a headless Vettonian sculpture documented since the 13th century. For centuries the bridge was the only access to the city and today it is a pedestrian walkway offering views of the river and the historic centre. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931 and a Site of Cultural Interest in 1998.
