In the Luxembourg Gardens, visitors find extensive lawns, tree-lined walks and a large octagonal pond where children can hire small sailing boats. The park holds numerous statues, including a series dedicated to former French queens, as well as the historic Medici Fountain and fenced play areas, a puppet theatre and a carousel for younger children. Free musical performances are given at the bandstand, and nearby are cafés with terraces beneath the trees, where visitors can enjoy the music outdoors. The garden also has tennis and basketball courts, an orchard with more than a thousand fruit trees, beehives for beekeeping classes, and a free school of horticulture in the Pavillon Davioud. In winter, the Orangerie shelters potted tree species, which adorn the park again in spring, while the greenhouses hold a collection of orchids and flowers for the flowerbeds and for decorating the Senate.
