National Garden of Athens

The National Garden of Athens is a 15.5-hectare public park in the city centre, located behind the Greek Parliament and next to the Zappeion. It was created as the Royal Garden by Queen Amalia in 1838 and designed by Friedrich Schmidt, who imported more than 500 plant species. Inside it, Roman ruins are preserved, including a villa with a mosaic, columns and a Roman inscription, as well as busts of figures such as Ioannis Kapodistrias and the poets Dionysios Solomos and Aristotelis Valaoritis. The garden has a duck pond, a Botanical Museum, a small café and a children's library with a play area. Open to the public from dawn to dusk, its main entrance is on Leoforos Amalias, with other gates on Vasilissis Sophias Avenue and Herodou Attikou Street, and a connection to Zappeion Park.
