Heian Shrine
CultureVisit: ~60 min
Shinto shrine built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto. Its main building reproduces, at five-eighths of its size, the audience hall of the old Heian imperial palace. The enormous red torii of about 24 metres stands out, on the avenue in front of the Okazaki museums. Behind the shrine extends the Shin'en garden, with ponds and stone bridges, which is visited separately.
