Temple of the Jōdo Buddhist school, in the Higashiyama district, at the foot of the eastern hills. It was founded in 853 by the monk Shinshō and is one of the best-known places in Kyoto to see maple trees in autumn. Its statue of Amida Nyorai looking backwards, the Mikaeri Amida, is famous. From the Tahōtō pagoda, in the upper part, you can see the city. During the red-leaf season it also opens at night with illuminations.
