San Fernando Cemetery
A municipal cemetery in the north of Seville, on Avenida Doctor Fedriani, next to the San Lázaro hospital. It was planned in 1851 by the municipal architect Balbino Marrón y Ranero and opened in 1853. It covers about 28 hectares and has a central avenue of about 800 metres divided into three sections. The current gateway is by Francisco Aurelio Álvarez Millán, from 1884, with two side administrative buildings from 1886. It is called Seville's open-air museum for its pantheons and sculptures. The best-known monument is the Cristo de las Mieles, a bronze crucifix by Antonio Susillo from 1895, installed in 1907 on a mound of rocks. The bullfighters Joselito el Gallo, Rafael el Gallo, Paquirri and Juan Belmonte, the flamenco singer La Niña de los Peines, the sculptor Susillo and the architect Aníbal González are buried here.
