JCG Sōya

The JCG Sōya is a Japanese icebreaker preserved as a museum ship in Tokyo, moored next to the Museum of Maritime Science since 1979. Visitors can go aboard and explore a ship largely kept in its original condition, with an interior that remains almost intact from the era of Antarctic exploration. Removed propellers are displayed on deck, and the ship retains the helicopter deck added during its refit for Antarctic service. The ship had a long career: built as an icebreaking cargo vessel, it served in the Second World War, took part in post-war repatriation, and between 1956 and 1962 carried out Antarctic missions, including the 1958 rescue at Showa Station, where two huskies, Taro and Jiro, survived after being left behind on the ice and became a symbol of endurance in Japan. The ship is open to the public daily and generally only closes when typhoons threaten Tokyo.
