Military fortress of the Alhambra, the oldest part of the complex, at the western end of the hill. Its walls and towers were reinforced in the 13th century under Muhammad I, the first Nasrid king. The towers, the Adarve and the remains of the military quarter survive, and from the Torre de la Vela there are views over Granada.
