Evangelical Lutheran Church of Vilnius
The Evangelical Lutheran church is the only one of this denomination in Vilnius and is in the Old Town, in a courtyard reached from Vokiečių Street through a very low arch. Its parish has around 600 members. The church was built in the mid-16th century, at the height of the Reformation, for the city's Lutheran community of German origin, and after several fires it was rebuilt in 1744 by Johann Christoph Glaubitz, the great architect of Vilnius Baroque. It is a Baroque building with rendered masonry. After independence in 1990 it was visited by the kings of Sweden and Norway, and for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation a monument to Martin Luther was erected in the courtyard. It is still in use as a church and services and community events are held there.
